WhySocial

Words mean a lot to me, which is why I don’t understand why some things are called the opposite of what they are. Like “smart” bombs. “Mild” cigars. Or “social” media. I think typing onto a tiny keypad, sending out Tweets or Facebook status updates, everything but interacting personally with someone is the farthest thing from social.

And the things some people will do via social media that they would never do in person. It seems to remove civility. And common sense. And maturity. Would any boy outside of elementary school show girls a photo of his underwear? Nope. But a Congressman did, dozens of times, all because he was physically removed from the viewers thanks to technology.

It should be called “anti-social” media.

And while we’re on the subject, shouldn’t they be called “slow down” bumps?
